This miracle of the healing of blind Bartimaeus is the final
miracle in the ministry of Jesus. On hearing Bartimaeus the crowd attempts to
silence him. However, he exhibits great faith and perseverance. The title that
he uses to address Jesus: “Son of David” carries messianic overtones. This is
the first time in the Gospel of Mark that such a title is used for Jesus. When
he is called by Jesus, Bartimaeus goes to him throwing off his cloak, which
could signify a throwing away of the old order to put on something new. After
enquiring what he would like to be done to him and hearing his request for
sight, Jesus heals him with a mere word. Jesus attributes the healing to the
faith of Bartimaeus. Only in Mark are we told that after he was healed,
Bartimaeus followed Jesus “on the way”.
We often imagine that we can see only with the eyes in our head
and so judge people based on what we see physically. We must realise that this
is only one way of seeing and sometimes it is more important to see with the
eyes of our hearts. Though Bartimeaus was physically blind, he could recognise
with the eyes of his heart who Jesus really was.
